The KOLON Industries FnC Organization (KOLON FnC) announced that its outdoor brand KOLON SPORT is introducing “Alpha Down,” a new hydrophobic down insulation designed to perform in wet conditions, as part of its winter offering for backpackers.

Winter backpacking takes place in outdoor environments where apparel is easily exposed to moisture from sudden winds, snow and rain, condensation, and perspiration. As maintaining body heat is critical amid repeated cycles of movement and rest, the moment down insulation becomes wet can lead to a sharp loss of warmth, posing a major challenge in winter outdoor activities. When conventional down comes into contact with moisture, the insulation tends to clump together, collapsing the still-air structure that is essential for heat retention and making it difficult to maintain the expected level of thermal performance.

KOLON SPORT’s Alpha Down was developed to address these limitations. Its defining feature is the ability to dry quickly even when exposed to harsh weather, while maintaining reliable insulation performance. Alpha Down is a hydrophobic down insulation with water-repellent properties, treated with an eco-friendly, PFC-free water-repellent finish that evenly coats each down cluster. As a result, moisture is repelled rather than absorbed, preventing the down from becoming wet or clumping even in high-humidity conditions. This helps preserve air pockets within the insulation, allowing warmth and volume to be retained for longer periods and supporting stable body temperature during extended outdoor activities.

Alpha Down is being applied for the first time to KOLON SPORT’s newly introduced Backpacking Light (BPL) series this year. The BPL series is designed around the core principle of lightweight backpacking, minimizing pack weight while delivering performance capable of responding to changing weather conditions. Alpha Down is applied across select styles in the BPL series, including mid- and heavy-weight down jackets, a down vest, and down pants. These pieces are constructed using Pertex® Quantum, a premium fabric that is ultra-lightweight yet highly durable. Known for its windproof and water-repellent performance, Pertex® Quantum delivers reliable comfort across a wide range of outdoor environments, including backpacking. 

Meanwhile, to help consumers make more informed choices when selecting down products, KOLON SPORT has newly developed the KOLON SPORT THERMAL INDEX (KTI) this year. Based on cold-weather performance testing, KTI categorizes warmth levels from 1 to 5 according to intended wearing conditions. The index has been applied to select down products this year, including items from the backpacking series, with plans to expand the system across all down styles starting next Fall/Winter season.
